If you are thinking of installing a solar energy system in your home, you know it’s a important decision and investment, and you may be wondering if it will add value to your home. The answer depends on a lot of factors. Below are some things to think about.

Solar Energy: Makes Home Economic Sense

First, how is the awareness level in your community when it comes to the benefits and merits of using solar power? If there is a lot of interest and involvement in green living, there’s a good chance that buyers will view the solar energy system as an asset and will be willing to pay more. But if you reside in an area that doesn’t have much eco-friendly activity, where people aren’t too concerned about recycling or the environment, buyers may be indifferent to the effort and expense you have invested into installing solar panels.

But even in a community completed unconcerned about green living, most people can appreciate the idea of saving money.  If you can show a paper trail of your energy cost reduction over a period of time, the potential buyer will have evidence that the solar energy system will be a benefit.  With heating and cooling bills often running into several hundred dollars a month for some families, savings on utilities can be important.

Will Taking Your House to Off Grid Solar Power Be an Investment?

But what if you’ve only had your solar panel system for a short time? How can you prove energy savings? Contact your power company and ask for a statistical projection of cost reduction over time. You can also get data from the company that did your solar energy system. Most of the larger solar installation companies have marketing departments that collect that kind of data to help people see that solar panels will save money for them.

Something else to consider is how common solar power systems are in your housing market.   If solar panel installations are common, your real estate agent can provide statistical data showing the difference in selling prices between houses with solar panels and those that use only a public utility service. If this type of information is accessible in your market, you have the best possible evidence that can be shown to a potential buyer.
